When did you last do something simply because it made you smile?

Something that wasn’t about achieving, improving, or being productive. Something that was just for you.

For many of us, life gradually becomes filled with responsibilities, expectations, and routines. We become very good at getting things done, supporting others, and meeting the demands placed upon us. We can lose touch with the things that make us feel energised, playful, and connected to ourselves. It can begin to feel like something we need to earn. But fun is not a reward for finishing everything else. It is a valuable and essential part of being human.

The Importance of Fun

Fun reminds us that we are more than our responsibilities.

It reconnects us with our natural curiosity and creativity. These are the parts of ourselves that enjoy trying new things, being playful, getting absorbed in something we love, or laughing without worrying whether it is “useful”.

As we grow older, we may lose touch with these joyful aspects of ourselves. We often become very focused on being capable, sensible, or meeting expectations. The activities that once brought us simple happiness can slowly fade into the background. However, those joyful parts of us are still there, waiting to be rediscovered.

Reconnecting with Joy

Making space for enjoyment and play allows us to reconnect with ourselves. It gives our minds a break from constantly analysing, planning, and solving problems. Whether it is laughing with someone you love, dancing around the kitchen, getting creative, exploring somewhere new, listening to music, being outdoors, or doing something that feels a little silly, these moments matter!

Joyful Moments

There is something powerful about giving ourselves permission to enjoy the present moment. We can nurture the parts of ourselves that are curious, imaginative, and full of life.

The Role of Counselling

Counselling can be a space to explore what helps you feel connected, fulfilled, and more like yourself. It can help you notice what brings you joy, what may have got in the way of it, and how you might create more room for the things that matter.

Reflecting on Your Joy

A question to reflect on:

What is one thing you loved doing when you were younger that you might enjoy bringing back into your life now?

Your joy deserves a place too.

Embracing Playfulness

In our busy lives, we often forget the importance of playfulness. It’s easy to dismiss it as unimportant, but play is essential for our mental and emotional well-being. When we engage in playful activities, we stimulate our creativity and reduce stress.

Finding Your Playful Side

Think about activities that once brought you joy. Perhaps it was painting, playing a sport, or simply spending time in nature. Reintroducing these activities into your life can be transformative. They can help you reconnect with your inner child and remind you of the simple pleasures in life.

The Benefits of Laughter

Laughter is a powerful tool for enhancing our mood and well-being. It can lighten our burdens and provide a fresh perspective on life. Engaging in activities that make us laugh can be a wonderful way to reconnect with ourselves and others.

Laughter as a Healing Tool

Consider watching a funny movie, attending a comedy show, or sharing jokes with friends. These moments of laughter can help you feel more connected and alive. They remind us that joy can be found in the simplest of things.

Creating a Joyful Routine

Incorporating joy into your daily routine can make a significant difference in your overall well-being. It doesn’t have to be a grand gesture; even small moments of joy can accumulate and have a lasting impact.

Simple Steps to Add Joy

  1. Schedule Joy: Set aside time each week for activities that bring you happiness.

  2. Be Spontaneous: Allow yourself to be spontaneous and try something new.

  3. Connect with Others: Spend time with friends or family who uplift you.

  4. Practice Mindfulness: Be present in the moment and appreciate the little things.

Conclusion

In conclusion, embracing joy and playfulness is essential for our mental wellness. It allows us to reconnect with ourselves and reminds us that we are more than our responsibilities. So, let’s give ourselves permission to enjoy life, rediscover our passions, and create space for joy.

Your joy deserves a place too.
